Listen…they lost, by a decent amount. These girls came to play offense! With 6 minutes to left in the 4th quarter the Black Bears were looking at 60/45 splits against the Buckeyes. Now, those numbers didn’t keep the game close due to Ohio State turning them over 22 times but offensively the school with 11,000 students was getting buckets against the school with 66,000 students. Ohio State forces the 8th most turnovers per game in the country(21.2) and that’s while playing the 24th toughest schedule.
Maine would fall 23 points short to the Buckeyes and if you didn’t watch the game you’ll glance over the game and say, “yeah that makes sense.” Boom, another good mid major goes unnoticed. Boom, another really, really good mid major player goes unnoticed, which is really unfortunate. Anne Simon, Maine’s best player went for went for 25 in this one. She was efficient(11-21 FG) and the lefty gave it to the Buckeyes a little bit. The “Luxembourg Lefty” who is also a two-time American East POY and DPOY has had an unbelievable career and will be quickly forgotten, or not even recognized at all. In 4.5 seasons she finished just short of scoring 2,000 points.
I am sure Anne Simon will go back overseas, make some money and continue to get buckets but there are too many of these women players from mid-major schools not getting enough shine. We’re doing an awesome job of embracing the stars of the game; Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Paige Bueckers, etc. Let’s start finding more players like Anne Simon and giving them some love also.
